Abstract

Focuses on Bijlmer Station in Amsterdam, by Grimshaw Architects. The station is made up of five main platforms. The exterior of the building is dominated by glass and steel and large louvres also feature. These are both decorative and functional, reducing wind swelling around the building. Roof glazing filters down a high level of daylight and gaps between the platforms allow light to reach the lower level of the station. Oregon pine soffits are also used and whilst the use of timber is rarely seen in railway stations, it is a "warm" material which adds to the feeling of a secure environment.
