Abstract
Research by BRE into the need to reconcile the use of natural ventilation - to save energy in the design of atria - with the needs of fire safety and smoke control strategies in these buildings. It is possible to find technical solutions to this problem. Part of a DETR PiT project on 'Overcoming conflicts between environmental natural ventilation and fire safety in atrium office-type buildings'. The BRE's project partners are Ove Arup & Partners and Colt International.
