Abstract

Design of Belfast's new concert hall, Waterfront Hall, with seating for 2 250, resulted from a competition in 1978. It is a circular building with a double concrete roof for acoustic purposes, Portland stone and Spanish granite finishes, three levels of restaurants with walls and roof in Planar glazing and curtain walling to the foyers. Materials have been chosen for low cost, low maintenance qualities. It is a flexible space, capable of being used for conferences, cinema projection and proscenium theatre events. Arup contributor: Acoustic comment by Rafal Orlowski. Cost comment by Peter Carson. Working details of domed copper-clad roof.
